fashion future: the new hat

Ok, so I had a bit of a lightning bolt moment the other day. A great big style lightning bolt hit me on my way to work. Are you ready for it…… Peter Pan hats.

I’m totally serious. If someone could start making Peter Pan hats in a range of colours and fabrics, I will buy ten. And I will tell my friends to buy ten.

I found this image which is pretty close to what I’m hoping for.

Nautical is back ladies!

Don’t you love it when a style comes roaring back into fashion and not only is it really cute, it’s ultra comfortable as well? You can’t really get more comfortable than boat shoes. And you don’t even need to own a boat!

I fell in love with them after seeing them on one of my favourite style blogs and hunted around for a month to find them. That was a week ago and they’ve made several appearances since! I paired them with my vintage MARCS drill pants, and thrift store retro t-shirt what I like to call my ‘professor’ jacket. Simply roll your cuffs and sleeves and you’ve got what my BFF described as ’80’s lesbian chic’. LOVE IT!

It’s kinda hard to really analyse the clothes when the model is so smokin’ but try your best and let me know what you think!

Tegan & Sara – front and back

Do you love Tegan and Sara inside and out? Well now you can wear your love on the front and back as well!

As part of their 2010 European Tour merch set, the lovely ladies have released this way cute t-shirt with Tegan on the front and Sara on the back. Hmm, that sounds nice doesn’t it? OK, maybe that was a little weird. But it’s a cute t-shirt and you all should buy it!

bow tie me up

Right now, there’s nothing sexier than a cute girl wearing a bow tie. Something about the convergence of classic and modern style and the gender overlap that makes it the perfect fashion statement and understated accessory.

Although bow ties reappeared on catwalks late last year, this particular trend has really only started creeping into the lesbian fashion scene over the last couple of months. Paired with the classic black and white suit, worn with a plaid shirt or simply strung around your neck above a singlet, nothing says style like a bow tie.

Get yours online from American Apparel or Etsy, or from the men’s accessory section of your local department store.

Ellen, our fashion icon

I woke up this morning wondering how this website has been up and running for a good seven months and we are yet to appreciate my favourite lesbian fashionista, Ms Ellen Degeneres. The woman who makes us laugh, makes us proud and who coined the (hilarious) widely accepted term, ‘chapstick lesbian’.

For me, Ellen is gorgeous in that ‘I hope I look half as good as her at 50’ way, but her fashion sense transcends generations.  She wears outfits my mom and I would share. I could steal every one of her jackets, vests, shirts, jeans, and especially her shoes. She makes casual glamourous, and simple sexy. I love that she doesnt try to be anything she’s not. That she’ll wear jeans and trainers with lip gloss and mascara, and that you will NEVER see her in a dress. I’m not huge on dresses anymore either, so I totally respect that!

What I love most about Ellen’s look is anyone can do and it won’t cost a whole week’s wage. Everyone owns jeans, t’s, jackets, sneakers – you just have to match them right. The key to this is putting on your regular outfit, and then adding one thing extra. Example: jeans+t-shirt+sneakers, then you could throw on a vest, or a scarf, or a cardi. Unless it gets cold where you are, try to stick to one extra item, otherwise it’s overkill.

Lucas Silveira’s candy skull tattoo

Lucas Silveira of The Cliks

Lucas Silveira

Lucas Silveira, lead guitarist and frontman for the awesomely-awesome band The Cliks, should be admired for a whole bunch of reasons. Not only is he the lead singer of a totally kick-ass (and mainstream!) band, he does it as a totally open transgendered man, never shying away from public discussion about his transition. It takes a lot of balls (no pun intended) to be who you are, especially when you have to do it publicly.

I’ve loved The Cliks for the past couple of years, ever since my girl introduced me to their song Oh Yeah, which ended up on repeat on my iPod for a solid 37 days. And after (finally!) watching season 4 of LA Ink over the weekend, I am now loving Lucas’ choice in tattoos!

I love tattoos! I plan to do a many more posts about them, and I think this one is incredible. Not only does it have a great significance to Lucas, it is a beautiful design by the great Kat Von D. The only problem with seeing this tattoo is how much is makes me want to get more myself. I guess that’s not really such a big problem is it?!

a fashion icon and now a god

Alexander McQueen died today. He was discovered in his apartment in London, apparently having hung himself just a week after his mother passed away. My heart is broken.

Alexander McQueen - he changed my world

In life, you live for those moments when you see something so beautiful it changes your world.  Seeing one of Alexander McQueen’s early pieces was one of those moments for me. As a teenager growing up in a sleepy coastal town, I was reading Vogue and dreaming about the big wide world when I flipped to a page featuring several Alexander McQueen designs. I remember gasping at how incredible, beautiful and utterly ridiculous they were and at that moment I discovered the true link between fashion and art. That moment changed the way I thought about fashion and about life generally, as I realised there was so much beauty to be seen and experienced by breaking away from everything you think you know, everything that should be, and everything you’ve always been told. By doing things your way, even when it could be the ‘wrong’ way, you could create something so totally and incredibly unique. This is what Alexander McQueen taught me and I’m sad that he is gone. I hope he is at peace now.
